In the heart of Zurich's old town stands a building that has become an integral part of the city's daily life. Its freshly whitewashed, salmon-colored façade may obscure the fact that the Hotel Adler's 500-year history dates back to a time when its painted glass windows were intended to prevent passers-by from watching the city's aristocrats happily throwing cups and dice. Today, a visit to the city is hardly complete without trying one of the Swiss specialties, such as a fondue or Zurich Geschnetzeltes in the hotel's Swiss Chuchi restaurant. Few tourists can walk past the hotel without taking a photo of the hotel cow, Heidi, on her balcony. The history of the Hotel Adler has an exciting connection to art. The famous Swiss animal and landscape painter Rudolf Koller spent his childhood there in the 1830s when his father ran the hotel. The wagoners' animals inspired him to draw them directly on the walls.
